JOHOR BARU: Police have remanded a 25-year-old man for allegedly posting an insulting comment about Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim on Facebook.
Johor police chief Comm Datuk Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said that the man from Batu Gajah, Perak, was arrested at a parking lot at Pangsapuri Sri Inai in Ampang Jaya, Selangor around 10.30pm yesterday.
He is believed to have uploaded an insulting remark about Tunku Ismail through a Facebook account under the name Shammeer Akhter.
The suspect has been detained, and devices used to carry out the offence have been seized, Comm Wan Ahmad said in a statement here on Tuesday.
The suspect will be remanded until today to assist in investigations under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Comm Wan Ahmad also urged the public not to misuse the social media platform by defaming or insulting others.
“It does not matter whether derogatory statements are made against royalty or common people, we will conduct investigations if a police report has been lodged.
“More than 10 people have been arrested and charged in court with the same offence since a taskforce was formed to monitor such issues on social media a few months ago.”
He added that although the suspect had issued an apology on Facebook, police would still continue with investigations.
