However, it\u2019s not quite up there with the likes of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electricscooterinsider.com\/electric-scooters\/reviews\/mantis-pro-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Mantis 10 Pro<\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electricscooterinsider.com\/electric-scooters\/reviews\/wolf-warrior-x-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Wolf Warrior X<\/strong><\/a> that sit in the upper tier of the category, nor is it comparable with the more basic models of its ilk \u2013 such as the original Mantis 8.<\/p><p>Terrain-wise, the 8 Pro\u2019s suspension, and tires (albeit small) enable it to take on both urban and off-road terrain with ease \u2013 though it\u2019s smoother, more well-maintained roads that you\u2019ll observe the best results. Plus, it\u2019s worth noting that the 8 Pro isn\u2019t designed for off-roading \u2013 if that\u2019s your bag, I\u2019d recommend shelling out a bit extra for the Wolf Warrior X and its interchangeable off-road tires.<\/p><p>If you\u2019re looking for a commuter scooter, don\u2019t be fooled by the 8 Pro\u2019s trim, slimmed-down frame \u2013 this isn\u2019t the model for you. While it\u2019s one of the lighter models the Manti range has produced, the 8 Pro is still almost 20 lbs heavier than the maximum weight I recommend for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electricscooterinsider.com\/best-electric-scooters-for-commuting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>commuter scooters<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><p>The 8 Pro is, however, <strong>a great scooter for new riders wanting an entry-level performance scooter<\/strong>. Despite being priced in the mid-ground between the Mantis Pro SE (18.2Ah) and Mantis Pro \/ Pro SE (24.5 Ah), it\u2019s the slowest of the bunch and doesn\u2019t offer many novel features or improvements to the design or build quality of those scooters.<br \/>Of the above, I suggest opting for the Mantis Pro SE for the best value (either the 18.2Ah or 24.5Ah). As we\u2019ll soon see, this scooter is like the original Mantis Pro, but with extra flair, an improved design, and a cheaper price tag.<\/p><p>For those not set on buying into the Manti range, there are several other scooters like the 8 Pro that offer very similar performance for less. The one that stands out most, is the <strong>Apollo Ghost<\/strong> &#8211; which, priced at $1,699, goes toe-to-toe with the 8 Pro. Alternatively, there are the VSETT 10+ (20.8Ah) and the Wolf Warrior X that are close in price but deliver significantly more value. Head to the \u2018Alternatives\u2019 section of the review where I unpack these scooters in relation to the 8 Pro in more detail.<\/p><h2>Comparison: Mantis 8 vs Mantis 8 Pro<\/h2><p>When a scooter has \u2018Pro\u2019 in its name (and many do), it usually means that it\u2019s an upgrade of an existing scooter. The 8 Pro also utilizes a superior form of battery that uses LG \/ Samsung cells (depending on where you buy it). This ensures peak performance longevity, unlike the 8\u2019s cheaper Chinese cells. The 8 Pro\u2019s battery also provides more Ah (amp hours) than its little bro, which translates to an extra 10 miles of range.<\/p><p>Plus, while the two scooters may look identical to the untrained eye, the 8 Pro delivers better build quality across the board. This is largely thanks to the additional stopping power the dual hydraulic brakes provide (upgraded from the 8\u2019s standard discs), and the MiniMotors EY3 display (upgraded from the QS-S4).<\/p><p>Of course, the original Mantis 8 does have some benefits. It\u2019s lighter and cheaper.<\/p><p>But ultimately, the Mantis 8 and 8 Pro occupy two distinctly different niches in the electric scooter ecosystem. <strong>While the 8 is more of a casual first-time rider scooter, the 8 Pro packs more of a punch<\/strong> and is better suited to riders wanting a scooter that is more fun to ride. The only area for improvement here is if Kaabo upgraded the grips to have a rubber profile that accounted for space to rest your palm. Instead, Kaabo equipped the 8 Pro with the same grips as the rest of the Manti lineup that take the form of rounded foam.<\/p><h3>Frame<\/h3><p>Consistent with both its predecessor (the original Mantis 8), as well as the other Manti models, <strong>the 8 Pro channels an understated, pared-back look and feel<\/strong>. Uncommon for a performance electric scooter, the 8 Pro is almost entirely black \u2013 there\u2019s just a couple of glimmers of red, on its springs and handlebars.<\/p><p>Ultimately, the design of the 8 Pro plays it pretty safe. Offering more traction than grip tape \u2013 and being much easier to clean \u2013 this material is a great example of the 8 Pro\u2019s build quality. The matting stays pinned down, so I have no qualms here. This is a small raised platform at the rear of the deck, which \u2013 when you place your back foot against it while riding \u2013 allows you to lean into the ride for more traction and comfort.<\/p><h3>Wheels<\/h3><p>Typically, the number in a scooter\u2019s name corresponds to the size of its tires \u2013 so fancy hazarding a guess at how large the Mantis 8 Pro\u2019s wheels are?<\/p><p>Yep \u2013 the 8 Pro\u2019s tires are 8 inches in diameter. In practice, this smaller, more agile type of profile gives the scooter a nimble feel that makes cornering and control a breeze. The alternative is the 10-inch profile of the tires we see on the Mantis 10 range. By comparison, <strong>the 8 Pro\u2019s tires have a larger width (3.1 vs 2.5 inches) that lends them an enhanced contact patch. Thankfully, the 8 Pro is one of them.<\/p><p>The 8 Pro also comes equipped with an anti-lock braking system. This neat extra feature \u2013 which you can always turn off via the EY3 display \u2013 helps prevent your scooter\u2019s brakes from seizing up. Ultimately, this stops you from skidding and spinning out when braking aggressively and it goes a long way to help you avoid injuries.<\/p><h3>Charge Time<\/h3><p><strong>The Mantis 8 Pro takes 12 hours to reach full charge<\/strong>. However, this is if you use the standard charger that is included. If you decide to upgrade to the fast charger ($129) you can get back out on the road in 6 hours.<\/p><p>The relatively lengthy charging time isn\u2019t helped by the fact that it has just one charging port. This is in contrast to scooters with similar spec sheets, such as the dual port-equipped Apollo Ghost, that can charge faster.<\/p><h2>Extra Features<\/h2><h3>EY3 MiniMotors Display & Throttle For Customized Performance Configuration<\/h3><p>Unless they have unique displays \u2013 like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electricscooterinsider.com\/electric-scooters\/reviews\/nami-burn-e-viper-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NAMI Burn-e Viper<\/strong><\/a> or the Wolf King GT \u2013 most scooters will have either the QS-S4 or EY3 display. These standardized devices double as both a finger throttle and a screen for communicating key info about your scooter\u2019s health and remaining battery life, as well as your key riding stats.<\/p><p>But in the electric scooter industry, not all display screens are equal. And, when it comes to style, durability, and the breadth of customization on offer, the EY3 is far superior to the more basic QS-S4. While you probably won\u2019t need to play with them on a day-to-day basis, these settings allow you to personalize your ride. Some of this functionality includes:<\/p><ul><li>Turning the E-ABS (electronic anti-lock braking system) on or off, and adjusting the strength of the regenerative braking system.<\/li><li>Toggling the auto-turn-off feature, along with a litany of other battery-saving modes and functionality.<\/li><li>Setting the max power output to your liking, and selecting either kick to start or instant throttle-based acceleration.<\/li><\/ul><p>Getting to grips with the full gamut of the EY3 display will take some time \u2013 particularly if you\u2019re a scooter newbie. But it\u2019s worth doing, and the results \u2013 a Mantis 8 Pro that\u2019s completely yours and tailored to your unique specifications \u2013 speak for themselves.<\/p><h3>Tactile Scooter Control Buttons<\/h3><p>There\u2019s something about tactile buttons on a scooter that I just love \u2013 and who wouldn\u2019t? <strong>These buttons are big, intuitive, and make a satisfying clicking sound when you depress them<\/strong>, so they\u2019re super easy to use.<\/p><p>The bank of buttons on the left includes switches to turn on your lights, turn signals, and toggle between the dual motors.<\/p><p>Pressing this last button allows you to ride either with both of your scooter\u2019s motors engaged or just the rear one. Both approaches have their benefits:<\/p><ul><li>Using both motors will allow you to hit the upper limits of the 33 mph speed, and enjoy the thrill of its surface-scorching acceleration rate.<\/li><li>Utilizing just a single motor will cap your speed, but ensure you\u2019re able to reach the lofty heights of the 40-mile maximum range.<\/li><\/ul><p>The button bank also offers plenty for the aesthetes out there. Unlike the cheap-looking, gimmicky red and yellow buttons on the handlebars of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electricscooterinsider.com\/electric-scooters\/reviews\/mantis-pro-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>original Mantis Pro<\/strong><\/a>, the 8 Pro\u2019s control panel isn\u2019t just nice to use \u2013 it\u2019s nice to look at, too.<\/p><p>The only issue I have with them is that, unlike their counterparts on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electricscooterinsider.com\/electric-scooters\/reviews\/wolf-warrior-x-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Wolf Warrior X<\/strong><\/a>, the 8 Pro\u2019s buttons don\u2019t light up or stay depressed when active. In the beginning, this can make it a little tough to understand which features are on, and which aren\u2019t \u2013 though it\u2019s something that you\u2019ll get used to as you become more comfortable with the scooter.<\/p><h3>Button Lights, Deck LEDs, & Turn Signals<\/h3><p>Unfortunately, Manti scooters typically fall prey to one of the most common design pitfalls in the electric scooter industry \u2013 <strong>ineffective lighting<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Let\u2019s start with the most glaring omission \u2013 the headlight. Just like on the original Mantis 10, the 8 Pro is missing a headlight and instead opts for a pair of deck-embedded button lights. Unfortunately, button lights are a poor substitute for a powerful headlight \u2013 particularly those of the uber-bright variety we see on the Wolf Warrior X \u2013 and this lets the 8 Pro down. Consequently, I\u2019m unable to recommend the 8 Pro for night riding, and you\u2019ll have to strap on some additional lighting if you have any hopes of visibility after dark.<\/p><p>Of course, being unable to see far at night doesn\u2019t necessarily mean anyone will have trouble spotting you \u2013 particularly when we consider the deck lighting. In addition to the button lights (the front pair are white, while the rear are red), the 8 Pro follows the lead of the rest of the Manti lineup with under-deck swag lighting. Again, this doesn\u2019t hold a candle to the customizable RGB lighting of the Wolf Warrior X, but it\u2019s better than nothing and looks fantastic.<\/p><p>Finally, there are the turn signals. While these are always an excellent addition, there\u2019s no denying the fact that the 8 Pro\u2019s have plenty of room for improvement. Mainly, I\u2019m referring here to the lack of any way of knowing if the turn signals are on. No light or icon flashes up on the 8 Pro\u2019s display, nor any audible beeping.
