KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications and Multimedia Ministry has sent proposals to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for legal amendments which will require all news portals and blogs to register with the Government, says Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak.

The Minister told reporters at Parliament lobby that the proposed amendments have been sent to the Attorney-General for perusal.

He added that the ministry would have a set criteria for registering news portals, and ensure that the amendments do not affect non-political bloggers.

“You must remember that some blogs are not political, they may be about fashion or others,” he said.

He added that requiring news portals to register was to ensure that existing laws was in step with advancements today.

“It is not intended to create any sort of problem,” he said, adding that the Internet was a major part of Malaysia life, both business and personal.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed was reported as saying on March 16 that Putrajaya had begun preliminary discussions to require news portals and blogs to register with the Government before they were allowed to operate.
