Net Merdeka is a campaign to advocate for internet rights and freedom of expression in Malaysia. It is formed in February 2016, in response to increasing proposals to regulate the internet, in particular proposals to amend the already broad and vague Communications and Multimedia Act.
We call for the government to:
- Halt the tabling of the Communications and Multimedia Act amendments; and
- Engage broad civil society consultation on any proposed amendment to the Act, and any further proposals related to regulation of the internet that impacts on our rights and freedoms.
The Coalition is also calling for greater discussion on Internet rights and freedoms amongst Malaysians, as we increasingly engage with this space in all aspects of our lives. The dynamic Malaysian cybersphere is shaped and built by us – demand our inclusion!
