JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested a 34-year-old man in Penang yesterday for a malicious statement he wrote about the Sultan of Johor through WhatsApp.

Johor police chief Datuk Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the suspect was arrested in Bandar Bayan Baru, Bayan Lepas, Penang about 5pm.

He said the suspect was being investigated for sending a malicious statement which linked Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar to a superstitious act through a statement he made on the messaging system.

“A police report was made a day before the arrest and police also seized two of his smartphones,” said Najmuddin, adding the case is investigated under Section 233(1)(a) of the Multimedia and Communications Act 1998.

Najmuddin said police will not compromise to such an act of defaming a ruler and the royal institution as it is an offence under the law.
