GEORGE TOWN: Namewee has been released on bail from the George Town Police District Headquarters in Jalan Patani here.

Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, 33, left the police station in a red Perodua Alza at about 2.47pm, Thursday.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said Wee, a film director and rapper, was released on bail while awaiting further instructions from the Attorney-General’s office.

Earlier Wednesday, the court rejected an application to extend Wee’s remand, which ended Thursday.

He was then taken to the George Town Police District Headquarters in Jalan Patani.

It was reported that he was remanded from Monday for four days over a music video that allegedly insulted Islam.

Prior to his arrest, Namewee had uploaded his latest music video Oh My God! onto his YouTube channel.

The version was slightly different from the one uploaded late last month, which caused an uproar over some content.

Claiming that Namewee insulted Islam in his latest production, 20 non-governmental organisations lodged police reports in Penang against the entertainer, who is no stranger to controversy.
