Available for just $169, the GoTrax GKS is a great scooter for young riders. The 150W motor allows a top speed of 7 mph, which is just fast enough to make them the coolest kid on the block but not too speedy that they'll be at risk of falling off and hurting themselves.
If they do find the top speed too much, it's easy to stop thanks to the pressure sensor brake. What does this mean? Well, the foot deck features two buttons, one at the front and one at the rear. To stop the scooter, you simply take your foot off the back button to kill the motor and stomp on the rear fender to halt completely.
Those buttons also make sure the scooter will never take off before your child's ready. For the scooter's motor to engage, both buttons need to be pressed at the same time. Although similar to the GoTrax GKS, the Lumios has plenty of upgrades to keep your child’s attention. The most noticeable is that it’s suitable for children aged 6 to 12. This is a result of its increased load capacity. By comparison to the original GKS, the Lumios can support an extra 34 lbs of rider weight. Alongside the 154 lbs load capacity, the adjustable handlebars ensure that your child can enjoy the scooter for many years – even when going through growth spurts.
Everything about this scooter has been designed to be simple and safe – there are no controls or displays on the handlebars, just easy-grip handles to make sure that little hands stay securely in place when riding.
Why We Recommend It:
Instead of a thumb or finger throttle that you’ll find on electric scooters for older children, the Lumios has two buttons built into the deck. When stepped on, the front button activates the light in the front tire, and the second starts the motor. Why We Recommend It:
By comparison to the rest of the scooters in the GKS line, the Pro measures 39.3 inches tall – which is 5 inches taller than the original GKS, and 2 inches higher than the Lumios. Measuring 16.9 inches, the handlebars also provide plenty of room. They give riders an extra 1.4-1.7 inches of space to control the steering column, which is a welcome addition given that the Pro sports a higher top speed than its GKS counterparts.
Because this is a slightly larger scooter, it weighs 18.7 lbs, but this is still light enough for most 9-10 year olds to maneuver or lift. There's no folding mechanism, but with some careful positioning, you can squeeze it into the trunk of a car.
As with GoTrax's other electric scooters designed for kids, the Pro has been created with safety and simplicity in mind. There are no buttons, throttles, or screens on the handlebars – this means that your child's attention will remain firmly on the path ahead, and their hands stay securely on the easy-grip handles. The GKS Pro needs to be kick-started and features the same safe start technology that we’ve seen on other GoTrax models. In brief, this requires both of the buttons on the deck to be stood on for the motor to engage. The motor instantly switches off if either foot is taken off one of the buttons.
Unlike electric scooters for older children, there's no throttle on the GKS Pro, and therefore, the only way to moderate speed is to press or lift your foot off the rear deck button. You can tap the button to try and maintain a constant speed, but in general, there are two modes of riding – acceleration, and deacceleration. Thankfully, the acceleration is gradual to ensure that children remain upright and have full control.
When it comes to slowing down, the rear fender can be stomped on to create friction with the tire and bring the scooter to a halt. Although this may seem low-tech compared to other scooters that use dedicated mechanical brakes – like discs and drums – it mirrors the most common braking method used in most children’s electric scooters. Having the braking power focused on the rear wheel ensures that the scooter doesn't jerk forward or throw them over the handlebars.
As to be expected on a kids scooter, the GKS Pro is equipped with solid rubber tires, and while these aren’t known for their shock-absorbing capabilities, those on the Pro do a good job on the flats. Besides, they are extremely low maintenance, meaning you’ll never have to worry about a flat tire.

The NEX is more comparable to adult electric scooters than the previous models on this list. You get an LED screen on the handlebars, front and rear lights, a thumb throttle, electric brakes, and a folding stem. As a result, it is an attractive option for kids that want all the bells and whistles that a scooter can offer.
Why We Recommend It:
Unlike the rest of the scooters on this list, the Hiboy NEX operates at 36V, rather than 24V. As a result, it has more zip than its competitors. Even though the GKS Pro – the NEX’s closest rival – has the same 150W motor, the NEX benefits from having the higher voltage, and therefore, it delivers a faster acceleration.
There are also controls that allow you to switch between two gears, one with a top speed of 5 mph and the other at 9 mph. This means you can limit beginner riders and allow those with more experience to go faster.
Similarly, although the NEX appears to have the same sized battery as the GKS Pro, it holds over five times more energy because of its higher-rated voltage. As a direct result, the wheels on the NEX can keep rolling for up to 12 miles, which far surpasses the 5 miles of the GKS Pro.
Available in either pink or black, the NEX has a clean aesthetic with smooth lines. There’s a large deck with a textured surface and plenty of room for two feet to find a comfortable stance. Similarly, taller riders will find comfort in the handlebars which measure 38.2 inches in height and 17.7 inches wide.
At 24.5 lbs, the NEX is slightly heavier than the previous models on our list. However, the addition of the folding stem significantly adds to its portability because it can be carried under one arm or lifted into a car trunk. A double catch holds the stem securely while you ride, and it clips to the rear fender when folded.
Moving on to ride quality, the solid rubber tires work well on flat surfaces and provide the same level of comfort as the rest of the GoTrax GKS line. However, a couple of areas where the scooter's design levels up ride quality are the thumb throttle and electronic brake paddle. Both give riders more control than they would have on any scooter in Gotrax’s single-speed GKS line. It still requires a kick-start which prevents children from being caught off-guard, but the addition of both the throttle and paddle allow riders to regulate the speed at which they are traveling.
All in all, there is a lot to get excited about. From the swag lighting that illuminates the top of the stem in a mesmerizing triangular pattern to the LED screen that displays your speed, battery life, and riding mode, the Hiboy NEX comes jam-packed with extras that’ll keep kids entertained for hours on end.

The slim design and four color options – including red, silver, teal, and blue – make the Vibe well-suited for riders who want to turn heads as they glide by. Unlike the rest of the scooters on this list, the battery is stored in the stem, giving the Vibe a slightly top-heavy build, but nonetheless, it manages to maintain an aesthetic that is simple and clean.
Adding to the brightly colored frame is the deck which follows suit with a complementary colored rubber matting that provides ample grip. One thing that differentiates the Vibe from the rest of GoTrax’s line of kids' scooters is that it doesn’t feature the safety start technology that uses two buttons – one at the front and one rear of the deck on which you place your feet – to start the scooter. Instead, the Vibe introduces an ergonomic thumb throttle and electronic brake paddle for more control.
Aside from the throttle and paddle, the cockpit is fairly basic with just a small red button that powers the scooter on or off, controls the lights, and gives you the ability to change riding mode. If you forget how to use the button, there’s a useful label at the top of the stem to remind you of each function. Elsewhere in the cockpit, an LED display takes pride of place centered between two easy-to-hold handgrips. The display shows your speed, riding mode, and battery level.
Although the controls are more advanced than on the scooters we recommend for younger children, they are simple enough to be mastered quickly.
With a weight of 20.9 lbs and an easy-to-operate folding system, the Vibe is easy to lift. There’s a folding lever located at the neck, which, when pulled, causes the stem to fold back and clip to the rear fender in two simple motions. The resulting folded scooter is small enough to store on the school bus or under a desk. The only drawback is that the thicker stem makes it tricky for children with small hands to pick it up when it's folded.
Once unfolded and in its upright form, the 200W motor propels the scooter to a top speed of 12 mph. The position of the motor in the front wheel hub means that the acceleration is smooth and steady but won't have the same punch provided by a rear-wheel drive scooter – like the GoTrax Apex. Alongside the 36V 4Ah battery which provides a maximum 7-mile range, the Vibe is ideal for dashing to catch the school bus, or just having fun at the weekend.
Safety hasn’t gone a miss, either. The electronic brake slows the front wheel and the manual stomp brake slows the rear. With both systems spreading the braking power, the Vibe has a braking setup that’s not only common for its price class but also reliable.
Overall, this is an excellent entry-level scooter for older kids. It keeps some of the safety features of those models for younger children – including the kick-to-start function – but adds a few extras for those who want to race around the neighborhood with their friends.

With a bigger motor and larger battery than any other scooter on our list, the GoTrax Apex is the most powerful kids' electric scooter. However, thanks to its small, compact frame and simple controls, it’s ideal for older children between the ages of 11 and 12.
Unlike the vast majority of electric scooters that are designed for kids, the Apex comes equipped with 8.5-inch pneumatic tires. These are both larger and plusher than the solid tires found on most other models. As a result, the Apex is the king of ride quality.
Plus, with a mostly matte-black frame that's complemented by the occasional green highlight, the Apex is sure to appeal to more style-conscious riders.
Why We Recommend It:
Compared to its sibling – the GoTrax Vibe – the rear hub-mounted 250W motor of the Apex is 25% bigger. This results in a top speed of 15.5 mph and a faster acceleration rate. With this in mind, we only recommend the Apex for kids that have experience riding electric scooters.
Although the 15.5 mph top speed may be beyond some children's capabilities, the Apex comes with a range of riding modes that can be used to limit the speed. This means that you can let your child get used to the scooter without worrying about them going too fast.
As for the battery, it has a capacity that is 50% greater than that of the GoTrax Vibe, and therefore delivers a maximum mileage that is more than double (7 vs 15 miles). The battery is stored in the deck which gives the scooter a low center of gravity and improves its overall handling.
Another feature that aids in the scooter’s handling is its pneumatic tires. Since these are filled with air – rather than being solid – they provide far more cushioning and much better shock absorbance. It's also worth mentioning that these tires have a thick rubber exterior which maintains traction and makes you feel in control while carving from side to side and braking.
When it comes to brakes, the Apex has a dual system that is operated simultaneously via a brake lever on the handlebars. Pulling on the brake engages the rear disc brake, while a secondary braking system in the form of an electromagnetic brake kicks into action slowing the front wheel. Together they provide reliable stopping power that's evenly distributed across both wheels.
With the addition of the mechanical brake, bigger motor, and larger battery, the Apex weighs in at 32.1 lbs. While this is light for an adult electric scooter, for a child, it may be too heavy. The good news is that the stem collapses and clips into the rear fender to make the scooter more compact for carrying.
The final, yet alluring feature that the Apex has to offer is its display. To help your child keep an eye on how fast they're going and check their remaining battery life, the Apex has a uniquely-shaped LED display built into the top of the stem. It's large and easy to read, but it's not quite bright enough to be viewed in direct sunlight. The dashboard also lets you activate the front headlight and view if cruise control is on or off.

The age a child can use an electric scooter depends on the capabilities of the child and the specs of the scooter that you choose. That being said, we only recommend electric scooters for children aged 6 and above.
There are hundreds of different scooters on the market, all designed to cater to different types of riders and different age groups. Are Kids Electric Scooters Worth It?
Yes, we think kids' electric scooters are worth it.
They are great fun, give children a taste of independence as they make their way from A to B, provide them with the opportunity to learn valuable skills, and support the development of fine and gross motor skills.
Giving a child control of an electric scooter allows them to learn a new set of skills that are completely different from those they use while riding a bike. It also means that they can travel further and faster than they could if walking. This is ideal for when you need to run family errands or want to go on an extended walk – instead of constantly being asked, “Are we nearly home yet?” you'll hear, “Can we go further?”
Are Electric Scooters Safe For Children?
In short, yes.
Kids' electric scooters are designed with age-appropriate features to help keep them safe.
These features include:
Smaller motors – Kids scooters have motors that range from 100W-250W, which is significantly less powerful than adult scooters. A smaller motor means a lower top speed, gentler acceleration, and greater control.
Riding modes – As well as having smaller motors and lower top speeds, some scooters limit the speed through several riding modes. These act like gears. For example, some scooters have three settings: one that will limit the scooter to a slow ‘beginners' speed so kids can get to grips with the basics, the second ups the limit, and the third completely unlocks the throttle to hit the top speed.
Kick-to-start technology – This feature is present on most kids' scooters and means that the motor will only turn on once the child has built up pace by pushing it along with their feet. This prevents the scooter from zooming off as soon as they touch the throttle.
Easy-to-use brakes – From hand brakes to rear fender brakes, and even technology designed to cut power to the motor once the brakes are applied, kids' scooters offer a range of different braking options. For most children, a scooter with a rear fender brake is a great option because it's similar to those used on non-electric scooters.
Additional safety features – Some brands that specialize in electric scooters for kids have added their own safety features. These range from two-button systems that require the rider to push off and have their feet on both of the buttons on the deck before the motor kicks in, to handlebars with no displays to avoid distractions while riding.
As with all electric scooters, there is the risk of injury, but it's the same level as that associated with a bike or manual scooter. The safety of children can be improved by making sure they wear a helmet and protective clothing when riding to protect them against falls and spills.
