Best Electric Scooters for Kids (Boys & Girls)

It wouldn't be fair if adults got to have all the fun, would it?

Thankfully, when it comes to electric scooters, there’s no need for kids to miss out. I have many happy memories of racing around my neighbourhood on my little blue kick-scooter and I can imagine you’ll have fond thoughts of similar times too.

However, the scooter game has changed quite a bit since then and manual scooters just don’t cut it anymore. The electric scooter is the gadget to have. Thankfully, there are lots of options out there that have been designed with kids in mind.

I’ve split the following scooters into four age brackets: 6-8, 9-10, 11-12,  and 13-14. This way, you’ll have an easier time narrowing down your options to find the best electric scooter for your child.

6-8 Years Old

1. GoTrax GKS

GoTrax GKS
Award: Best for 6-8 Year Olds
A great first electric scooter option. Affordable and safe, the GOTRAX GKS has a kid-friendly speed limit of 7.5 mph, will keep your children entertained for up to 4 miles of playtime with a safety start and braking technology that makes it an excellent choice for smaller children.
£139.90

Let’s start with the GoTrax GKS. Available for just £139.90, this is a great scooter for younger riders.

The 150W motor allows a top speed of 7.5 mph which is just fast enough to make them the coolest kid on the block, but not too speedy they’ll be at risk of falling off and hurting themselves.

GoTrax GKS Rear Wheel and Fender

If they do find the top speed too much, it’s easy to stop thanks to the pressure sensor brake. What does this mean? Well, the foot deck features two buttons, one at the back and one at the front. To stop the scooter, take your foot off the back button to kill the motor and press down on the wheel brake to halt it completely.

GoTrax GKS Deck and Safety Start Technology

Those buttons also make sure the scooter will never take off before your child’s ready. For the scooter’s motor to engage, both buttons need to be pressed at the same time. This way, your child can step on the first button, secure their balance, and give the scooter a kick to get going, before pushing the second one to engage the motor.

Having an assisted kick start is much safer than an automatic start system. It means the scooter only engages when your child is ready and not before so they’re less likely to lose their balance and take a spill.

GoTrax GKS Grippy Handlebars

We’ve all had that one toy we never wanted to stop playing with, and the GKS is a solid contender for this sort of attention. Luckily for you and your kids, this scooter can keep going for 4 miles on a single battery. This makes it perfect for neighbourhood explorations and relaxing afternoons out as a family. Plus, it only takes 5 hours to fully recharge so it won’t be long before your little one is back out playing, showing off their favourite gadget, and cruising through the local park.

So, it’s safe and it’ll keep them entertained for hours. What else is there?

Well, one of the coolest things about this scooter is how it looks. You can purchase it in one of five dual-tone colour combinations, including pink, blue, and green. It has a cool tread pattern on the foot deck to help with balance and grip, whilst the black, solid rubber tyres ride seamlessly over cracks in the pavement.

GoTrax GKS Front Wheel

It’s also very lightweight. At just 8.1 kg, this is perfect for small hands to pick up and move around, which is crucial considering the GKS isn’t foldable. Despite its small size, it can support a load weight of up to 70 kg, which means it can grow with your child and will last them for many years to come.

It’s fair to say that the GKS is a firm favourite amongst younger riders. It’s speedy, can keep going for miles, and it looks good. That’s not to mention that the safety start technology makes it an excellent choice for smaller children. Parents will also be glad to know that it doesn’t take a lot of assembling once it arrives, so your kids can hop on and begin their scooter adventures almost immediately.

1. Segway ZING E8

Segway ZING E8
Award: Best for 9-12 Year Olds
This is a great scooter for children under 12 who are just learning to ride, thanks to the three ride modes guiding them through the basics of electric scooters. Available in eye-popping blue or pink, this scooter can reach up to 8.6 mph and has a range of 6.2 miles. A triple-braking system makes the E8 a safe choice, whilst the spring suspension delivers a comfortable ride.
£219.99

Younger kids shouldn’t have to miss out on all those cool techie features adult scooters have and it looks like personal transport brand Segway agrees. That’s why they’ve designed the Ninebot ZING E8, a scooter that's fun by the bucket loads and will keep your children occupied for hours at a time.

Segway Zing E8 Frame

Firstly, I’ve got to mention how cool these scooters look. Available in pink or blue, their vivid design is sure to catch the eye of even the pickiest kids out there. The curved handlebars and low-lying foot deck also provide great stability so staying balanced is easy.

Segway Zing E8 Blue and Pink

Similarly to adult scooters from Segway, the ZING E8 is made from aerospace-graded aluminium alloy. This is both durable and lightweight, and as a result, the scooter only weighs 8 kg. It’s extremely portable too. Unlike the GKS, it can be folded, so storing it in the boot of your car won’t be an issue.

Segway Zing E8 Folded in Trunk

The E8’s 130W motor allows your kids to reach a moderate top speed of 8.6 mph. Does this sound a little fast to you? Don’t worry, Segway has already thought ahead. The E8 comes with three riding modes: safety, cruise, and throttle.

The safety setting is perfect for beginners, as speed is limited to 6.2 mph so your kids can get to grips with the basics. When they feel more confident, they can move on to cruise mode. This setting doesn’t require the throttle but instead uses your child’s starting kick to move into a constant glide. The more power behind the kick, the faster the scooter goes! If you have older children, or they’re more confident riders, switch into the third setting to unlock the throttle and hit the top speed.

This scooter is suitable for children between the ages of 6 and 12, but the inclusion of three riding modes makes it a particularly good option for younger children. The different levels allow them to get to grips with the basics of riding before moving onto faster settings and gives them more control over the scooter.

Segway Zing E8 Power Button and Rear Fender

Segway knows that safety is the most important factor when it comes to kids’ scooters, which is why the ZING E8 comes with a triple braking system. Just so you know, most adult scooters only have two brakes, which makes this extra impressive. Kids have the option of choosing between a handbrake, which operates the dual electric and mechanical brake or stepping on the rear fender to bring them to a halt.

The E8 also has a smart battery management system that prevents the battery from overheating and keeps it in better condition for longer. It also means your child will be able to hit that 6.2 mile top-range, so they can zoom around your neighbourhood to their heart’s content.

What’s really impressive about the ZING E8 is that it features front spring shock absorption. Again, this is something that you don’t even see on some adult scooters. What this means is that your kids will be able to use their scooter across a variety of surfaces including grass and dirt roads without losing their balance or being shaken all over the place. Plus the solid rubber tyres can easily deal with pavement cracks or bumps.

Segway Zing E8 Front Tire and Shock Absorber

Another tick in its favour is that the E8 also comes with hill-climbing power. It can easily deal with inclines up to 7% so gently sloping streets will be a breeze. It does have a load limit of between 44 and 50 kg, so you might find that the closer your child is to the top end of this, the more the scooter will struggle on the upward climbs.

The ZING E8 has a long list of advantages, but you’ll have to pay for them. It’s over double the price of the GKS, retailing at £219.99. Having said that, you do get a lot for your money and all the added extras will definitely keep your kids busy. I guarantee they won’t be able to wipe the smiles off their faces.

11-12 Years Old

1. Segway ZING E10

Segway ZING E10
Award: Best for 11-12 Year Olds
The Zing E10 is an upgraded version of the E8, aimed at children over the age of 10. It has a higher top speed of 10 mph, can handle a taller, heavier rider (up to 60 kg), and has a more grown-up feel to it. Luckily, it still includes everything that makes the E8 awesome, such as the three riding modes and spring suspension.
£249.99

Do you like the look of the ZING E8 but worried it might be a bit too small for your kids? Don’t sweat it. Take a look at the ZING E10. Like the E8, this scooter is designed by Segway but has some small alterations that make it the ideal choice for children over the age of 10.

Firstly, let’s take a look at the similarities. If the E8 was up your kid’s street you’ll be pleased to hear that the E10 shares many of its standout features. Segway has used the same lithium-ion battery in both models so the ZING E10 offers a maximum range of 6.2 miles, meaning it has enough juice to keep your kids entertained. They’ll also be able to tackle a variety of terrain thanks to the patented anti-skid tyres and spring shock absorption, which helps deliver a top-quality, smooth ride.

Segway Zing E10 Front Wheel and Deck

Additionally, it has enough power to deal with 7% slopes like its smaller counterpart. They both share the same IPX4 waterproof rating too, so riding in the rain won’t damage the scooter. Of course, I’d recommend sticking to more pleasant conditions, mostly because rain increases the risk of accidental slips and slides.

Speaking of safety, the ZING E10 features the same triple-braking system seen on the E8, giving riders multiple options when it comes to braking and slowing down. This is especially important if your little thrill seekers like to ride in the fastest mode, with their thumb firmly on the throttle.

The last similarity lies in the trio of riding modes that make both the E8 and E10 such great options for kids. This allows them to either ride at a slower speed, use the kick-start mechanism to ease into a constant glide, or hit the throttle for top speeds.

Riding the Segway Zing E10

So what about the differences? Well, the biggest and most practical one is that the ZING E10 has been designed to take a heavier load of between 20 and 60 kg. Not only that, but it can also support a taller rider too, accommodating children between 4.3” and 5.3”. Although the scooter is officially marketed for children above 8, I think the E10 is perfect if you’ve got kids between the ages of 11 and 12.

With the increased age capacity comes the responsibility of an increased upper speed. The Zing E10 features a 150W motor which allows the scooter to reach 10 mph. This is pretty nippy for an electric scooter and definitely ups the fun factor.

The bigger motor also adds to the overall weight of the scooter, increasing it to 8.5 kg. Luckily, thanks to the fact it’s made with durable aviation-grade aluminium alloy, this is still light enough for small hands to grip and lift. The one-step folding system means it’s still as portable as the E8. It’ll fit comfortably in your car's boot when your little adventurers are begging you to let them take it on vacation with you.

Segway Zing E10 Folded and Being Carried

The Zing E10 feels like a more grown-up scooter. Gone are the flashy pastel colours, to be replaced by a sleek black frame trimmed with understated blue accents. It’ll appeal to children who are after a more stylish and adult look.

The increased speed and load capacity do result in a slightly higher price tag of £249.99, which is £30 more than the E8. Considering this scooter is aimed towards those heading into their young years before becoming a teenager, I think the extra price is more than reasonable. Speed, range, safety, and a stylish grown-up look – the ZING E10 has everything your pre-teen is after.

13-14 Year Olds

1. Segway Ninebot E22E

Segway Ninebot E22E
Award: Best for 13-14 Year Olds
The E22E is a scooter with a grown-up attitude. This is a big step-up from traditional kid’s scooters, and this is reflected in the speed, range, and features on offer. It’ll tick that cool-gadget box as well as being a practical investment for your teen.
£339.00

Reaching your teen years means saying goodbye to the more childish options and hello to something with a bit more of a cool, sophisticated edge. That’s where the Ninebot E22E comes in.

There’s a noticeable step up when it comes to this scooter. This is largely because it’s designed for adults, although is more than suitable for children between the ages of 13 and 14. Plus, the added features are sure to satisfy that teenage thirst for cool gadgets and cutting-edge technology, two things Segway is known for delivering on.

Segway Ninebot E22 Frame

Amongst adult commuter scooters, the top speed on the E22E is considered a bit slow, but in my opinion, 12.4 mph is a great starting point for a teen’s first electric scooter. Plus, for a 13 or 14-year-old, it’s going to feel pretty fast.

Of course, you don’t have to hit the top thresholds and the inclusion of three different riding modes makes it easier to regulate speed. The cruise setting has a limit of 9.3 mph, whereas normal mode lets you creep up towards 12.4 mph. Sports mode brings the extra thrill, allowing you to tackle 15% inclines with ease and delivering sharper acceleration when you do engage the throttle. Thankfully, the E22E has a kick-start, so riders can get their balance first before the motor gets going and accelerates up to top speed.

Segway Ninebot E22 Throttle

Does your teen want to escape the bus or ride in Mom’s car while on the way to school? Well, now they can.

The ZING E8 and E10 both have relatively low ranges, making them great for sticking close to home, but the E22E comes with almost double the mileage, delivering 13.7 miles on a single charge. This is perfect for getting older children to and from school safely. Plus, it has an astonishingly low recharge time of 3.5 hours, minimizing the risk of running out of battery accidentally.

You also have the option of purchasing a second battery pack which extends the range to a whopping 28 miles. However, it also boosts the top speed to 15.5 mph which is pretty rapid compared to what younger scooters offer.

If you do attach the external battery pack your scooter will end up looking like the Ninebot ES4 seen below:

Ninebot ES4 Folded

This has its pros and its cons. Longer journeys are a nice addition, but the top speed might be too fast for comfort. One big bonus of the extra battery pack is that this scooter can grow alongside your teen.

It is important to note that an extra battery pack increases the weight of the scooter. As it is, the E22E is already quite a hefty scooter compared to others on this list, weighing in at 13.5 kg. The simple, one-step folding mechanism makes it easy to carry on public transport or pop in the boot of your car but your teen will have to put a bit of muscle into it — this is not the lightest option.

Segway Ninebot E22 Folded in Trunk

A faster ride requires reliable safety features, and Segway won’t let you down. The E22E comes with a dual brake system featuring an ABS (anti-lock braking to prevent skidding) electronic brake and a rear fender brake, ensuring your child can come to a safe stop.

Here's a look at the electronic brake:

Segway Ninebot E22 Electronic Brake

And here's the rear fender brake:

Plus, the addition of a bell as well as a front and rear LED light makes riders more visible to pedestrians.

Segway Ninebot E22 LED Headlight

The E22E is an extremely well-built scooter, and Segway is renowned for making high-quality, safe machines with durable materials. They’re also known for using innovative tech like their 9” patented dual-density tyres. What does this mean? Let me explain: these tyres aren’t solid rubber or air-filled. Instead, they contain PU foam. It might sound crazy, but this delivers decent shock absorption, soaking up any hard knocks and keeping riders balanced, which is vital on a scooter like the E22E which doesn’t have any suspension.

Segway Ninebot E22 Dual Density Tire

Unlike scooters for younger children, the E22E comes with an LED display in the centre of the handlebars. This is great for monitoring speed, mileage, and battery life as well as turning on cruise control if your teen needs a break from the throttle. Plus, did I mention the E22E features an integrated mobile-app? Connect the scooter to your teen’s phone and they can store all of their ride data in one place.

Segway Ninebot E22 LED Display

Robust construction, innovative premium features, and a sleek matt-black design… surely a scooter with this many grown-up specs is going to set you back a fair bit? Well, I’m happy to tell you that you can get it all for under £400. Considering the step up in quality and features on offer, this is a great price for a scooter that can grow with your teen and provide fun and practicality for many years to come.

2. Segway Ninebot E25E

Segway Ninebot E25E
The slower acceleration and moderate range on the E25E makes it perfect for less confident riders. Its sleek and smart aesthetic will appeal to young teenagers who want an electric scooter that they can show off to their friends. Unlike the other scooters in this list, you have the option to add a seat accessory, although it will need to be purchased separately.
£399.00

Fashion and style are two things most people remember when they look back on their youth. There’s always that one hairstyle or piece of clothing we all had (and might faintly regret) and it’s no different for kids today. If your teenager has a carefully cultivated look, the Ninebot E25E will complement any style situation.

Why? Well, quite frankly, it’s a great scooter to look at. With large wheels, a clean design, and an effortlessly cool charcoal body accented with silver, the E25E doesn’t feel like a child’s scooter. Instead, it channels grown-up sophistication.

Ninebot ES2 Frame

This is echoed by its stats. The E25E can reach a top speed of 15.5 mph, with three different ride modes to choose from (sport, standard, and limited) which allows riders to decide how fast they want to go and the type of battery life they want (e.g. the faster you go, the less mileage). This is a great feature for less experienced riders, helping them grasp the basics.

In the past, the acceleration on the E25E has been a sticking point for scooter enthusiasts as it is slower to engage than other machines and can be sluggish. But I see this as a positive when choosing a scooter for an inexperienced rider as it allows them to get their balance after they’ve kicked off without rapid acceleration causing them to wobble.

Plus, you’ll be glad to know that the electric brake and mechanical foot brake do a good job of slowing the scooter down at all speeds. Braking power is important on all electric scooters, but even more so when you’re buying for younger and less confident riders.

Ninebot ES2 Rear Wheel and Fender

The E25E has slightly more range than the E22E, offering an advertised 15.5 miles on a single charge. This is still decent, although, in reality, you’ll see slightly less than this depending on how aggressively it’s ridden. Choosing standard or limited drive mode will extend this battery considerably. Thankfully, it only takes 3.5 hours to recharge.

Scooters are for stand up riding only, right?

Well, not always and not with the Ninebot E25E. With the detachable seat accessory, your teen can turn their scooter from a standard ride to a seated one in a matter of minutes. All it takes is a simple process of screwing the seat onto the deck and your kids can sit back and give their legs a rest.

Featuring a high-elastic foam cushion, seat post suspension, and two shock absorption balls, the E25E’s seat has been designed to deliver maximum comfort. However, it isn’t something that can be attached on the go since it’s secured with four small screws. Instead, it’ll have to be set up at the beginning of the ride, even if riders want to spend part of it standing up. Additionally, it doesn’t come as standard and is available to purchase for an extra cost.

Ninebot ES2 Shock Absorber

When it comes to comfort, the seat isn’t the only feature that sets the E25E up nicely. Large solid rubber tyres glide over smooth pavements and deliver a low-maintenance ride because riders are never at risk of getting a flat tyre. However, they don’t provide any cushioning so venturing onto grass, sand, or rocks is a bit risky, although the front and rear shock absorbers help with this a little. For the safest and most comfortable ride, make sure your teenager sticks to well-maintained tarmac and paving.

The E25E is sightly heavier than the E22E, weighing 14.3 kg. Regardless of the extra weight, it’s manageable for most younger riders and easy to carry thanks to the simple folding mechanism. It even folds down with the seat attached for maximum portability.

Ninebot ES2 Folded

The centrally-located LED dashboard channels the same smart urban vibe as the rest of the scooter, and displays your speed and battery, as well as allowing you to operate the bright headlight.

Ninebot ES2 LED Display

To top off the sleek design, the E25E comes with under-deck lighting that can be customized from the IOS and Android-friendly Bluetooth app. Riders can also store all of their ride data here, as well as access riding tips and instructions for beginners.

Ninebot ES2 Front Headlight at Night

When it comes to price, the Ninebot E25E is the most expensive of the bunch costing £399. It’s not a scooter for speed enthusiasts or anyone who’s looking for something with a long-range or hill climbing ability. Instead, it’s perfect for the less confident rider who wants a stylish aesthetic, decent specs, and the option of adding a seat.

  1. Ninebot E22E – 9 inches, dual-density rubber

FAQs

What Age is Appropriate For an Electric Scooter?

This depends entirely on which scooter you choose and the specs on offer.

There are a ton of different scooters on the market that cater to all sorts of age groups. For example, scooters like the GoTrax GKS and Ninebot Zing E8 have been designed for children as young as 6 years old, whilst models like the Segway Ninebot E22 and ES2 have more power under their belts and are better suited to older riders in their early teens.

Are Electric Scooters Safe For Children?

In short, yes.

Kids electric scooters are designed with age-appropriate features to help keep them safe. These features include:

  • Kick-to-start technology – the motor will only turn on once the child has built up some pace as opposed zooming off as soon as they hit the throttle.
  • Speed settings – most kids scooters limit the speed through several settings. For example, some scooters have 3 settings: one that will limit the scooter to a slow ‘beginners’ speed so kids can get to grips with the basics, the second that ups the limit, and the third that unlocks the throttle to hit the top speeds.
  • Multiple braking options – from hand brakes to rear fender brakes and even technology that cuts the motor once the brakes are applied.

As with all scooters, there is the risk of injury, but it’s the same level as that associated with a bike or manual scooter. The safety of children can be improved by making sure they wear a helmet and protective clothing when riding to protect them against falls and spills.
