Testing & Analysis

How Did We Choose the Scooters?

During the selection process, we paid particular attention to the following criteria:

  • Size and power of the motors (i.e. voltage, watts, top speed, torque, and acceleration).
  • How smoothly the power was pulled from the battery to the motors via the controllers.
  • Ride quality and tire performance (i.e. grip, tread, shock absorption, and maneuverability).
  • Braking performance.
  • Build quality and durability.

Summary

The Wolf Warrior X is a lighter, more versatile version of the popular Wolf Warrior. You still get the iconic dual stem, alongside all of the Wolf’s key traits – including the hydraulic suspension and brakes – but with greater portability and superior handling.

Front View of Wolf Warrior X Frame

For many, these improvements, and the lower price of $1,999, make the X the best electric scooter to access the incredible range of Wolf scooters.

Why We Recommend It:

Kaabo's Wolf Warrior and Wolf King lines have some of the most comfortable, highest-performing scooters we've ever tested. However, when you read our reviews, you'll see that our only major drawback was their cumbersome folding mechanisms. This is where the Wolf Warrior X shines. It addresses these issues to make a scooter that is accessible to more riders.

Wolf Warrior X Rear Tire and Dual Springs

Despite keeping a similar appearance and design, the wizards at Kaabo have worked their magic on this scooter to reduce its bulkiness and overall weight. Coming in at 74.5 lbs, it's no lightweight, but it's significantly easier to maneuver than heavier models like the 115 lbs of the Wolf King GT.

The portability factor has also taken an impressive step forward. When you fold the X, its length remains the same – something that the rest of the Wolf scooters can’t claim. Previous models used a cumbersome folding mechanism that resulted in the entire stem collapsing over the deck, causing the folded dimensions to extend by 11.5 inches (this equates to an overall length that measures the same as a small person laying down). Luckily, the X uses a double-clamp mechanism that folds the handlebars at the stem. The result is a folded length remains the same as when it’s unfolded but with its height significantly reduced.

Wolf Warrior X Folding Clamps

The reduction in weight has also made the X more agile. The front fork hydraulic suspension, dual rear springs, and pair of 10-inch pneumatic tires are all you need to glide along happily. Even off the beaten track, you'll be impressed at how comfortable you’ll feel on this scooter. Rolling over large obstacles is light work for the X. In addition, the tall stem, wide handlebars, and spacious deck all contribute to excellent handling.

Wolf Warrior X Deck

Despite being smaller, the X is still an excellent performance scooter that delivers a few surprises of its own. Its dual 1100W motors produce a combined peak output of 3500W, which is enough to blast it up to a top speed of 43 mph. Powering those motors are the highly efficient 30Ah Sine Wave controllers and a large 60V 21Ah battery. Up until the release of the Wolf King GT and Warrior GT, the X was the only model to boast Sine Wave controllers – with the rest opting for Square Wave ones.

Wolf Warrior X Rear Motor

We often like to make the comparison of Sine and Square Wave controllers by imagining a bowling ball. Think of these controllers, for a moment, as a force pushing a bowling ball down a lane. While the Square Wave controllers jab and nudge, the Sine Wave ones administer a smooth, constant push the whole way. The result is a smooth throttle response that makes riding far more enjoyable, rather than being jerked back and forth.

Wolf Warrior X Front Tire

When it comes to pulling on the throttle and unleashing the full might of the dual-motors and Sine Wave controllers, this beauty has an acceleration rate that’ll get you to 15 mph in 2.2 seconds. The large motors are also more than enough to send the X up some serious slopes. With a maximum hill-climbing ability of 35 degrees, this scooter can even take on the steepest street in the world, Baldwin Street.

Wolf Warrior X Handlebars

Moving on to the brakes, the X comes with a top-of-the-range Zoom hydraulic disc braking system activated by two hand levers. You also get an electronic regenerative brake that harvests the power released during braking and feeds it back into the battery. As if that's not enough, there’s an anti-locking braking system (ABS) that stops the wheels from skidding and keeps you in complete control while you come to a stop. With all this working to your advantage, you can stop from 15 mph in 3.0 meters.

Close Up of Wolf Warrior X Disc Brake

Now that we've explained what it's like to ride the X, it's time to turn our attention to the handlebars. Here, you'll find a QS-S4 throttle module – a standard piece of kit found on many scooters. It features a bright, easy-to-read display and a finger throttle. As well as viewing your speed, riding mode, distance, and battery use, you can also use it to customize the strength of your regen brakes, toggle the ABS setting, activate battery saver modes, and alter the max motor output.

Wolf Warrior X EY3 MiniMotors Display

You also get several tactile buttons that allow you to operate the horn and lights. The lights on the X are up-to-scratch for riding at any time of the day or night. You get a dazzling double headlight, a taillight, turn signals, and to top it off, RGB LEDs that wrap around either side of the deck. The color of the RBG lights can also be adjusted via an app. While these look great and increase your visibility in the dark, the casing isn't as strong as the rest of the scooter and can get damaged if they are struck.

Wolf Warrior X Deck Lights

The Wolf Warrior X is an exceptional scooter. With super-responsive handling, excellent controllers, and dual 1100W engines that will propel you up to 43 mph, what's not to love. If you've ever been put off the Wolf Warrior or Wolf King GT because of their size and weight, then the X is exactly what you're looking for.

Apollo Phantom 60V - Best Under $2,500

Black Friday Sale: Save $400 | Was: $2,399 | Now: $1,999
Apollo Phantom
Award: Best Under $2,500

The Good:

The Bad:

Summary:

With dual 60V 1400W motors, the Apollo Phantom V2 has a furious top speed of 43 mph and a whip-lash-inducing acceleration rate. At the flick of a switch, you can swap from one motor to two, dramatically altering the scooter's capabilities to match your need for speed.

With an eye-catching geometric design and exceptional attention to detail applied to every part of the frame, the Phantom stands head and shoulders above other models at the same price.

Why We Recommend It:

When Apollo's designers put the Phantom together, they got a lot right – from its efficient battery and dual brushless motors to its sporty appearance, 1000 lumen headlight, and superb handling. Together, the motors produce enough power to get you up 25-degree inclines, making it ideal if you live in an undulating environment. This, combined with its responsive thumb throttle and smooth ride, makes the Phantom one of the best electric scooters in the 45 mph category.

Apollo Phantom Frame

With its midnight black finish and alluring grey highlights, the frame is a sight to behold. It's made from high-strength aviation-grade aluminum and features a double reinforced stem to prevent buckling or other damage during adventurous rides. Where the stem meets the folding mechanism, the joint is well made and when locked into place, it is as solid as a rock – meaning you can rely on the Phantom for fast-paced rides without having to worry about stem wobble (which can often be the case on Dualtron models).

Apollo Phantom Folding Claw

Plus, when it comes to folding the scooter, the three-pronged mechanism is super easy to release. When the stem is collapsed over the deck, a hook on the back of the handlebars latches into a cutout on the kickplate. Once the handlebars and deck are coupled, the Phantom can be lifted. However, with a weight of 77 lbs, you won’t want to carry for it long.

Apollo Phantom Folded

One of the many things that makes the Phantom stand out is that it was designed and built for Apollo alone. Now, this may sound weird – but, unlike many other scooters – including some of Apollo’s older models – it is a common occurrence for brands to take pre-made scooters, slap their branding on them, and then sell them. This is known as OEM production. Apollo was one of the first brands to pioneer a new frontier in scooter design by designing and building their own model – the Phantom – at their Canadian HQ. The result is a scooter that – at the time of its release – blew all other models out of the water. To this day, the Phantom remains a popular scooter.

Apollo Phantom Rear Fender, Disc Brake, Swingarm, and Kickplate

Building on its proprietary frame, Apollo equipped with Phantom with a quadruple spring suspension system that is something you won't find anywhere else. It works together with the swingarms and 10-inch air-filled tires to absorb vibrations, thereby enabling a comfortable riding experience. One thing that is important to note, though, is that while the Phantom was built to deliver the best experience on urban terrain, the combination of its suspension and terrain-agnostic tire tread lends itself to off-road dirt tracks and forest paths. However, it's not just the shock-absorbing qualities that provide the comfort here – the handlebars are extra wide, the deck is spacious, and the kickplate lets you lean into the ride.

Apollo Phantom Spring Suspension

With the addition of the powerful 1400W motors that have a continuous power output of 2800W, you can bet that the Phantom delivers when it comes to torque. In fact, it has one of the fastest acceleration rates of any of the electric scooters we've tested.

Apollo Phantom Thumb Throttle

If you're hoping to make the most of the acceleration, you'll need some decent brakes to make sure that you can slow down. Fitted with NUTT hydraulic discs, the Phantom has no problem bringing you to a stop. These are some of the best brakes on the market and ensure excellent stopping power to halt you from 15 mph in 3.0 meters. It's also worth noting that the brakes feature ceramic brake pads – these are high quality, reduce squeaking, and increase durability, making them long-lasting.

Apollo Phantom Rear Disc Brake

With such powerful motors, efficient battery power is also a must. With a big 60V 21Ah battery, the Phantom puts out an impressive 40 miles of maximum range when ridden conservatively. But, if you put the proverbial pedal to the metal, you can expect 25 miles, and this is where the HEX display comes in.

Apollo Phantom Handlebars

The HEX display was one of the most anticipated elements of the Phantom’s design and provides one of the largest screens on the market. It's got so many features you'll need to take some time to go through each one and familiarize yourself with the controls. As well as showing your speed, distance traveled, and riding mode, there are a bunch of adjustable settings that you can use to personalize features such as brake strength and display brightness. And, the pièce de résistance – the display will calculate your remaining mileage based on your most recent acceleration pattern, meaning you can effectively plan your journey.

Close up of Apollo Phantom HEX Display

Also on the handlebars, you'll find the controls for the various lights. The Phantom has one of the best lighting packages, including a high-mounted 1000-Lumen headlight, two front deck lights, a rear brake light, and deck-mounted turn signals. The only disappointment is that there are no turn signals at the front.

Side Profile of Apollo Phantom Headlight

There's no doubt that the Apollo Phantom 60V is an excellent scooter well suited for adventurous, adrenaline-fueled trips. The speed and acceleration on offer mean that you'll be leaving most other riders in the dust.

ELECTRICSCOOTERINSIDER

Summary

With its immense power, adjustable hydraulic suspension, and smorgasbord of premium features, the Mantis King GT offers a fresh new take on Kaabo’s popular Mantis scooter line.

While it shares a similar appearance to previous Mantis scooters, the GT represents a significant upgrade. Its combination of dual 1100W motors and highly-efficient Sine Wave controllers conjure a savagely powerful acceleration rate that is more commonly associated with ultra-performance models.

Josh With Mantis King GT

No matter which way you look at the King GT, it is an uncompromising union of ferocity and finesse.

Why We Recommend It:

Attention to detail is the name of the game here, with the Mantis King GT performing well in all key areas.

Mantis King GT Front 1100W Motor

Just one look at this scooter and you’ll see the exceptional level of build quality that’s been achieved. All the components fit together perfectly, leaving no room for anything to creak, rattle, or wobble. The new claw-like folding mechanism locks the stem into place to ensure it's solid as a rock, while the steering column has a damper built into it to ensure excellent control when riding at top speeds.

Mantis King GT Folding Mechanism

Alongside the large, imposing frame, and tall, wide-spanning handlebars – that are perfectly tuned for riders of all sizes – the GT presents itself as a ride that all can enjoy. Previously on this list, we featured the Dualtron Victor, but after reviewing its performance against the Mantis King GT, the latter impressed us with its handling. Unlike Dualtron models, which have notoriously short handlebars, you don’t have to worry about instability at top speeds.

Mantis King GT Handlebars

It’s not just the top half of the scooter that inspires confidence while ripping the throttle, though. The large 8.7 x 21-inch deck is slathered in a thick, grippy rubber matting, while the kickplate – that’s perfectly curved to match the contour of your foot – elevates the riding experience. Whether you like to ride with both feet firmly planted on the deck, or prefer to adopt a more aggressive riding stance, the GT caters to all.

Mantis King GT Grippy Deck

As previously mentioned, the Mantis King GT features more motor power than the rest of the Mantis line, but it also manages to pack 1440Wh of battery power, too. As a result, it’s able to keep the wheels rolling for up to 56 miles. However, let's be real, you’re not going to buy the King GT to take leisurely rides around the block. This scooter has been purpose-built for burning rubber. With this in mind, if you ride in the fastest setting you can expect a real-world range of 38 miles.

Mantis King GT M16 Charge Port

Thankfully, the inclusion of a name-brand battery (Samsung), instead of the standard FST batteries found in many other electric scooters, means that it provides optimum performance for hundreds of charge cycles (equating to several years of use).

Having a lot of battery power under the hood also plays a key role in the scooter’s ability to maximize its motor power output, and this is evidenced by its ferocious acceleration rate that sees you hitting 15 mph in just 1.9 seconds, followed by 25 mph in just 4.0 seconds. Before you know it, you’re riding at the 43 mph top speed.

Mantis King GT Powerful Motor

You’ll also have no problem flying up hills. The 4200W peak power output reduces the steepest inclines to a walk in the park.

To cope with its vicious levels of performance, Kaabo equipped it with a set of fully hydraulic Zoom disc brakes. With the capability of bringing you to a complete stop from 15 mph in just 2.1 meters, it’s clear to see why they’re often considered to be some of the best brakes you can get.

Mantis King GT Front Hydraulic Disc Brake

The brakes are controlled by standard hand levers on the handlebars where you’ll also find the 4.2-inch TFT display. This has replaced the Minimotors EY3 throttle unit that was found on older Mantis models. Not only do you get a larger, clearer screen, that can display more data, but it also gives you more options for customization (i.e. adjusting the power delivery to the motors).

Mantis King GT Display

The Mantis King GT is packed with extras and upgrades but it’s finally time to talk about what could easily be its most impressive feature; the adjustable hydraulic suspension. This system can be customized to your weight and preferences with the simple twist of a dial. The effect this has on ride quality is beyond what any other Mantis scooter is capable of achieving.

Mantis King GT Adjustable Hydraulic Suspension

When you also take into account the large 10 x 3-inch pneumatic hybrid tires, it’s easy to see why we rate the Mantis King GT as the best all-terrain electric scooter. No matter where you ride it – whether that’s on smooth city streets or craggy forest trails – the combination of the rebound adjustment with the beefy tires delivers a riding experience that is hard to beat.

Mantis King GT Off-Road Tire

Thanks to the suite of premium features that are all designed to aid this scooter’s calling as a fast-paced beast, it’s easily become one of our go-to models to ride. With groundbreaking innovation, a blistering acceleration rate, and a top speed that will leave your heart thumping in your chest, the Mantis King GT is worth every dime.

ELECTRICSCOOTERINSIDER100

Summary

The NAMI Burn-e 2 is the latest version of the popular Burn-e scooter. With smaller motors and battery than the original, this scooter is significantly cheaper yet still manages to pack in plenty of upgrades. The result is an electric scooter that outstrips its competitors in every category to become the apex of performance models.

With superb adjustable shocks and the ability to create riding modes tailored to your preferences, very few scooters will ever reach this level of ride quality.

Josh on the NAMI Burn-e 2

Why We Recommend It:

The Burn-e 2 is a stunning scooter that’s perfect for experienced riders that want the best build and ride quality of any scooter in our 140+ strong database. The dual 72V 1000W motors deliver a monstrous top speed of 45 mph and a scorching acceleration rate that takes you from 0 to 15 mph in just 1.8 seconds and to 25 mph in 3.2 seconds. With torque like that, you'd expect to be thrown off the back of the deck, but NAMI has installed dual 30A Sine Wave controllers to produce a rapid yet smooth acceleration.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Sine Wave Controller

However, if you don't think you have the experience to handle such a performance-oriented vehicle, you can activate one of the five riding modes. You can tailor these to your exact preferences by capping the top speed, adjusting the acceleration strength, and even changing how the power is distributed across both motors. This level of customization is unheard of and is just one of the strings in the Burn-e 2’s well-strung bow.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Scooter Controls

Another standout feature is the 72V 28Ah battery that delivers a jaw-dropping range of 90 miles. In addition, the welded tubular construction gives it structural integrity and a unique appearance that is unmatched by any other scooter.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Imposing Frame

Despite weighing a beastly 100 lbs, this scooter has the most efficient folding mechanism of any other scooter in its class. Its design is proprietary and shines a light on the meticulous detail of the scooter. As a result, the stem is as solid as a rock when locked in place, yet also quick to fold. The quality of the scooter’s build gets even better with a carbon fiber stem and built-in attachments to equip a steering damper – which, as luck may have it, comes included for free in the box. Attaching the steering damper increases the already exceptional handling and makes the NAMI – along with its wide handlebars and excellent suspension – the best scooter to ride at speeds of up 45 mph.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Steering Damper

By now it’s should be clear that this is a cutting-edge scooter created to prioritize performance and ride quality. Every aspect of the scooter from its tall handlebars that sit at 42.5 inches above the deck to the adjustable KKE hydraulic suspension and 11-inch air-filled tubeless tires produces a ride that no other scooter – except for the NAMI Burn-e 2 MAX – can compete against.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Rebound Dial

If you want to upgrade the scooter further, then we recommend fitting it with PMT tires. We were astonished at the difference they made. They provide significantly more grip than standard nylon tires, making the scooter feel more secure.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Rear Tire

Also, when paired with the Logan hydraulic 2-piston brakes, we saw a surprising improvement in stopping power. Even in their own right, these are some of the best brakes that we've seen on a scooter – but, combined with the PMT tires, you come to a stop in 1.8 meters from 15 mph. This is 40% better than the average 3.0-meter stopping distance of other scooters in its price class.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Rear Disc Brake

Now it's time to move from performance to the cockpit. In pride of place at the center of the handlebars, you'll find the stunning full-color display. With numerous display options and customizable functions, this is one of the best and brightest we've seen. It even comes with a USB port so you can charge your devices on the go. Then, there are the lights. As well as a super bright 2000 Lumen headlight, you get an effective taillight and a stunning set of turn signals that run along either side of the deck.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Rear Turn Signals

The Burn-e 2 was introduced as an affordable alternative to its more expensive siblings, and my god, what a fantastic job NAMI has done.
