Why We Recommend It:
The Ghost isn’t the largest scooter we’ve tested but provides plenty of deck space for both feet to rest comfortably. The deck measures 18 by 9 inches, so it’s easy to adjust your stance on longer rides. Plus, the kickplate adds an extra 4 inches of space allowing for more aggressive riding styles.
When it comes to the frame, it is made from an aluminum alloy and feels solid at all times. Typically, scooters with foldable handlebars – like those on the Ghost – can suffer from some wiggle room in the joints that fold and unfold. Fortunately, the Ghost’s handlebars screw into one another making for a secure structure that remains solid as a rock.
When creating the Ghost, the designers at Apollo set out to make it as compact as possible – at least within the realms of what could be achieved with a performance scooter. While at 64 lbs, it’s still relatively heavy, they succeeded by adding several folding mechanisms. The stem folds and clicks into a hook at the rear of the deck, and once the handlebars have been folded, it measures 50.5 (L) x 9.3 (W) x 21 (H) inches when folded. This makes it small enough to pack in a trunk or under a desk, but if you want to carry it onto public transport, you might need to look for something lighter.
After having ridden many Apollo scooters, we have become accustomed to expecting a certain level of ride quality, and the Ghost is no exception. The large pneumatic tires and front and back dual spring suspension mean that you’ll be smiling happily as you glide over most surfaces, even some rougher trails. The tall stem and wide-spanning handlebars further aid its handling.
Turning our attention to performance, the Ghost doesn’t disappoint. The dual motors will take you from 0 to 15 mph in just 2.3 seconds and to 25 mph in 5.3. While it’s not as quick as some other dual-motor electric scooters, it beats both the VSETT 9+R and Apollo Phantom.
Continuing in its line of top-quality performance, its braking ability is another tick in the Ghost’s favor. With an impressive stopping distance of 3.4 meters from 15 mph, you can tell that this scooter that’s been designed with safety as a priority. You get mechanical disc brakes on each wheel alongside an electronic regenerative brake that harvests wasted energy and feeds it back into the battery.
The brakes are operated by hand levers on the handlebars, which is also where you’ll find the QS-S4 display and throttle module. This is a commonly used device and displays your speed, distance, and battery life on a brightly lit color screen. You can also access the P-settings to control other functions, including acceleration intensity and regenerative brake strength.
As for its lights, the Ghost is somewhat well catered for with two LED lights in the front, two in the rear, and blue deck light strips. The deck lights create an impressive glow and keep you seen by other road users, but the front lights are too low to provide sufficient visibility for night riding.

After extensive testing, we can confirm that VSETT hit the nail on the head delivering a scooter whose every component is rock solid.
Compared to many performance scooters, the 9+R is relatively small and light. Although it weighs 55 lbs – more than the 42 lb threshold I usually recommend for commuter scooters – its foldable handlebars and relatively thin, yet long deck means that it boasts impressive portability credentials.
When it comes to comfort, we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of ride that the scooter was able to deliver. While the 8.5-inch air-filled tires have a relatively small diameter compared to their counterparts (i.e. the Apollo Ghost and Phantom – which both have 10-inch tires), they took on most lumps and bumps in their stride.
The swingarm suspension works wonders alongside the tires to protect you from the disruptive rhythms of the ground below. Both the front and rear suspension systems share the same spring and swingarm setup so the travel of the springs and the damping are well balanced.
Interestingly, the tires boast a larger-than-normal width. Usually, tires that measure 8.5 inches have a width of 2 inches or 2.5, at a push. However, those on the VSETT 9+R benefit from being 3 inches wide. This increases the profile of the tire that remains in contact with the ground. As a result, the 9+R maintains traction, even when leaning into corners or carving from side to side.
With the VSETT 9+R proving its maneuverability and handling credentials, let’s move our focus to acceleration. For a scooter with dual motors that are both smaller (650W vs 800W) and less powerful (48V vs 52V) than that of its closest rival – the Apollo Ghost – it has a surprisingly nippy acceleration rate. Plus, compared to other scooters in its weight class, it sits at the top of the list.
The dual 650W motors pack a punch and will even take on challenging inclines, making the 9+R a well-rounded scooter. This brings us to its battery. Equipped with a large 21Ah LG battery, it boasts a respectable maximum range of 40 miles – which aligns with its 35 mph counterparts. Under realistic conditions, where you let the throttle rip, you can expect a range of 25 miles – which, again, is in line with the other scooters on this list.
The 9+R also comes with a set of hand-operated, dual mechanical disc brakes. These are highly responsive and quickly bring you to a halt at any speed. In general, I prefer scooters with hydraulic brakes, but I found that these were easily able to provide the stopping power needed for the motors.
If we move our attention back to the handlebars, you'll see that the 9+R boasts a QS-S4 display. This common display unit is found on scooters from entry-level budget models up to ultra-performance beasts. The only thing that’s different about this QS-S4 and those you see on other models – like the Apollo Ghost – is that it is encased in a plastic mold that could be mistaken as a doppelganger for the EY3 MiniMotors display.
The display is large, easy to read, and bright enough even in direct sunlight. Here, you can view your speed, distance, battery life, and riding mode, as well as customize features like the auto-turn-off and cruise control settings.

After your first time on this scooter, you'll quickly see why it was one of the most anticipated releases. Designed in Canada, it went through several iterations to be perfected into the current version and is still one of the most popular models amongst experienced riders and scooter enthusiasts.
Luckily the Phantom comes with a simple riding mode toggle and several customizable settings that let you tame the beast as you get used to it.
Much like the Apollo Ghost, the Phantom has a stunning geometric design. The most eye-catching elements are the large 8.5 by 20-inch deck, angled rear kick plate, silver swingarms, and commanding cockpit. All of the structural parts are made from a robust aluminum alloy, and areas of the design – like the stem – have been double-reinforced to ensure long-lasting durability.
Despite being made from lightweight materials, the scooter weighs 77 lbs. This is hardly surprising given the large motors and battery, but it still folds easily. In fact, the Phantom sports three independent safety mechanisms that consign stem wobble to history. Once the stem is upright and locked into place, it is rock solid – making the Phantom a great choice for aggressive riding. The stem even felt sturdy and secure when I took it on challenging off-road trails.
Once the stem is folded, a hook on the rear of the handlebars clips securely into a cutout in the kickplate. As a result, you can pick it from the stem.
With two 1200W motors, you may correctly assume that this scooter can deliver high levels of torque and acceleration. It's capable of hitting 15 mph in 2.5 seconds and speeding up to 25 mph in just 5.6 seconds. While this is impressive, it's not quite as quick as the cheaper Apollo Ghost. The Ghost is undoubtedly a fast scooter, but the Phantom is an unrelenting beast; that extra power in the motors means that it will keep that high level of performance even on steep hills and rough terrain. So, while other scooters may slow down, the Phantom will keep powering ahead.
When it comes to the brakes, the cheapest version of the Phantom comes with standard mechanical brakes. While these do a good job by bringing you to stop in 3.4 meters from 15 mph, for some riders, it may be worth paying the extra money for the hydraulics. From 15 mph, the hydraulics bring you to a stop in 3.0 meters – a 12% improvement over the regular discs.
As well as the front and rear disc brakes, you get an electric regenerative brake, which enhances the stopping power and directs any lost energy back into the battery. You can also adjust the strength of the regen brake across 5 levels where 1 is the weakest and 5 is the strongest.
One of the most obvious features of the Phantom, besides its power credentials, is its unique quadruple spring suspension. Combined with large 10-inch pneumatic tires that sport a tread suitable for all terrains, bumps and curbs are sufficiently dampened leaving you feeling well protected from jolts and vibrations. On our scale of shock absorption – where 1 is extremely stiff and 10 is extremely soft – we scored the Phantom a 7/10.
Alongside the suspension, another of the Phantom’s most notable features is its large HEX display. This is a premium feature explicitly designed to be used on this scooter (i.e. Apollo hasn’t used a standard display found on other scooters). The HEX is a sizeable center-mounted console that makes it easy to take in all the essential information at a glance. Here, you can also adjust customizable settings and see your speed and predicted miles left in the battery.
Other extra features include a lock spot in the neck. This makes it easier to secure the Phantom to a bike rack or similar object. The Phantom also features a particularly well-thought-out system of lights. It has a high-mounted, built-in 1000 Lumen headlight, front deck lights, taillights, and integrated rear turn signals.
