With a top speed of 15.5 mph, the GoTrax XR Elite is an excellent budget scooter. It has the longest range (18 miles) out of all the scooters in the GoTrax XR range and is perfect if you have slightly further to go. Despite the reduced price tag, you can still expect excellent ride comfort and a dual-braking system so you feel in control at all times. This scooter is well worth the money you pay.

Segway Ninebot E25E

Plus, the build quality means this is a scooter that will last the test of time. It’s not pricey, but it’s more expensive than others with similar specs thanks to the fact it comes from a well-respected brand like Segway.
GoTrax GXL V2
The GoTrax GXL V2 is the best you can buy for under £300. Featuring a top speed of 15.5 mph, dual brakes, and pneumatic tyres, the V2 is a steal. It performs way above its price point and is ideal for beginners wanting to dip their toes into the world of electric scooters, or if you’re just simply on a tighter budget. It doesn’t have an extensive range though, so it’s better suited for leisurely rides as opposed to long commutes.
INOKIM Mini 2
They say that good things come in small packages, and that’s never been truer than when it comes to the INOKIM Mini 2. This is a scooter that has been designed specifically for lighter users (up to 75 kg) with short commutes or multi-modal journeys. Its strengths lie in its portability, but its 15 mph top speed means it has the power to keep up with the larger scooters on this list.

Unagi Model One Scooter Unboxing – Is It Weird I Find It Sexy?
Although the Unagi channels a slick and futuristic aesthetic, I can assure you it’s not just a pretty face. This thing can move and has the best acceleration out of all the scooters on this list. This is down to its two 250W motors, one of which is placed on each wheel to give you that extra burst of power and torque when you need it. Not only will you be able to reach the Model One’s top speed of 17 mph in the blink of an eye, but you’ll also have no problem tackling hills up to a 15% incline.
As a luxury scooter, the Unagi doesn’t cater to just one type of rider. That’s why it comes in two versions. The E500 is equipped with dual motors, whereas the E250 just has a single motor on the front wheel. If you don’t need the 1000W of peak output the E500 offers, the E250 is cheaper and 1.6 kg lighter. Having said this, the acceleration is a lot slower and it’s not nearly as fearsome on hills as its more powerful sibling.
Even with the extra motor, the E500 isn’t a heavy machine. It weighs 12 kg and Unagi claims that it’s the first scooter to feature a one-step folding mechanism. Whether this is accurate or not, the Model One is very easy to fold down and the patented stainless steel hinge system collapses with, as you guessed, one click.
The Model One is the result of creative innovation and countless prototypes. Don’t let its lightweight frame deceive you — this is one sturdy scooter and it can support riders of up to 125 kg. It’s constructed from hardwearing Japanese TORAY carbon fibre. This is the same stuff Elon Musk uses on his Space-X rockets. If you ever harboured a secret desire to be an astronaut, this might just be the next best thing!
You can get the Model One in four different colours, but this scooter’s paint job isn’t just an aesthetic detail. It also has a water and dirt-resistant rating of IP54 and acts as an anti-abrasion layer to protect against the wear and tear of everyday riding. The Model One might look delicate, but it’s got some real steel in its bones without the added weight.
When it comes to riding comfort, the Model One performs well on smooth city roads. It features 7.5 inch solid tyres, but don’t worry, they’re not the usual run-of-the-mill rubber wheels you might be expecting. Unagi once again bucks convention by punctuating them with air pockets which make them softer than traditional solid tyres. This also means they have better shock absorption too, although they can’t quite stand up to the performance of pneumatics in terms of cushioning and traction. They are less maintenance though, and you’ll still be more than comfortable when surfing city streets.
The Model One is best suited to riders who want to stick closer to home or who have a shorter commute. Its 15.5-mile range is ideal for these kinds of distances, although the actual mileage you’ll see will be dependent on your riding style. The Model One’s 3-speed settings (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) will help with that. Riding in the slower modes will allow you to conserve your battery and eke out the miles, however, the advanced setting will see your range drop. When you need to recharge, expect to wait 4 to 5 hours for a full battery boost.
The Model One features a dual electronic anti-lock braking system that delivers strong stopping power. You’ll be able to slow yourself down whenever you need to, no matter where you are. As the brakes are dependent on the scooter’s electronic battery, the Model One also comes with a manual foot brake if you find yourself caught out. I would have liked to see a drum or disc brake for the price point, especially as cheaper scooters fulfil this requirement.
In line with its major sci-fi vibes, the magnesium alloy cockpit of the Model One looks somewhat like the control panel of a spaceship, especially the sleek, integrated display where you can monitor your riding stats. Alongside this, you’ll find the horn as well as the controls for the brake and LED lights. The front and rear lights on the Model One are very strong and do a great job of illuminating the path before you when it gets dark.
Without a doubt, the Model One is a masterclass in design, and luxury seeps from every inch of it. This is one scooter you’ll want to show off, and you’ll turn heads as you ride. It’s perfect for the stylish city traveller, especially if you like your gadgets to come with a sharp edge of modern class and coolness. This being said, the Model One’s well-thought-out design and flamboyant materials mean you’ll pay a lot for the specs on offer. It has a price tag of £899, which might be too much. If you’re looking for a scooter without the frills and fancies, but still delivers on raw performance, the GoTrax XR Elite will be up your street.

If you don’t have £1,000 to spend on your new electric scooter, don’t panic. There are plenty of excellent budget options out there that might lack the Model One’s exotic cocktail of features but are still awesome scooters for daily use.
The competitively-priced GoTrax XR Elite is one of these. It’s the newest scooter in the GoTrax XR line and it costs far less. Although it’s a lot cheaper than scooters like the Model One, it still has plenty to offer, making it great value for money. Interested? Let me tell you more.
Equipped with a 300W motor, the Elite has a top speed of 15.5 mph. Its responsive acceleration and smooth handling will make cruising along city paths and bike lanes a dream. Just because it’s a budget scooter doesn’t mean that you’ll have to stick to flat routes either. The torque and acceleration on the Elite are strong enough to handle 15% hills, opening the city so that nowhere is off-limits.
The Elite has the longest range of all the 15 mph electric scooters, giving you around 18 miles of travel on a single charge. Most budget scooters tend to have a shorter range. It’s ideal if you want to bookend your commute with a stress-free cruise rather than a sweaty rush.
Although the Elite’s batteries don’t carry the LG pedigree that those on the GoTrax XR Ultra do, you can rest assured that your scooter won’t burn out on you unexpectedly, thanks to the smart battery management system that protects it against overheating, overcharging, or short-circuiting. The Elite also has a fairly short recharge time of 3-4 hours, so you won’t need to hang around for long when it runs flat.
For the price, it’s great to see that the Elite comes with a dual-braking system, featuring a rear disc brake and front anti-lock electrical brake. Disc brakes are efficient and are only second-in-line to hydraulics when it comes to quality. This means that you’ll always be in control thanks to the responsive power of both brakes.
Equally, GoTrax hasn’t scrimped when it comes to tyres. Rather than opting for solid rubber wheels, the Elite is equipped with 8.5 inch air-filled tyres which are my preferred option. This is because they grip the road better and have better traction in wet weather. They also provide damping and shock absorption, soaking up the vibrations of the road, which is important on a scooter like the Elite that doesn’t have any suspension. Because of this, I’d advise riding this scooter primarily on smooth, well-maintained roads because you’ll still feel the bumps of rougher terrain despite the impressive tyres.
Considering how cheap this scooter is, its build quality is excellent. It has the durability to withstand daily riding and its water-resistant rating of IP54 means it’s protected against light showers. It also comes with a wide, sturdy deck measuring 6.6 inches which is spacious enough for riders up to 100 kg to easily keep their balance.
For a budget scooter, the Elite’s aesthetic is pretty slick, especially the integrated display on the handlebars. It might not be as polished, but it’s quite similar to that on the Model One. From here, you can monitor your speed and battery life, as well as switch on cruise control. It’s impressive that you can get cruise control on a scooter this cheap and is the kind of premium touch that makes you feel like you’re getting your money’s worth.
You can also operate your headlight from the handlebar, which has decent illumination for riding in the dark, not to mention the rear light and 6 additional reflectors that boost your visibility.
At 14.4 kg, the Elite is lightweight, and can easily be lifted and carried. The quick, one-step folding mechanism makes collapsing the scooter simple, so you can take it on public transport or store it away when it’s no longer needed.
GoTrax might not make the flashiest or most feature-full machines, but they do produce excellent budget scooters that are perfect for those of us who can’t afford to splash the cash as freely as we might like. Even better, they go the extra mile to make sure that your budget doesn’t mean your chosen scooter is boring or poor-quality. The GoTrax XR Elite is a great example of this.
Second-in-line to the GoTrax XR Elite is the Ultra. This is another great option from the budget scooter masters with a similar price point of £349, but with a few minor differences.
Something the Elite and Ultra have in common is their joint top speed of 15.5 mph. As mentioned, this is a good pace for inner-city riding where the proximity of other road users makes it difficult to go any faster. Similar to its newer sibling, the Ultra’s acceleration is responsive and reasonably quick, although you’re not going to be winning any races on this guy. Its 300W motor has enough power to handle smaller city slopes, but more ambitious inclines are out of reach.
The biggest difference between the two scooters is seen in the range. The Ultra offers a top mileage of 16 miles which is 2 miles less than the Elite. However, this scooter has something its sibling doesn’t: top-quality LG batteries. I cannot overstate how impressive it is to see this calibre of battery on a scooter that costs less than £400. You’re still likely to see less than the total 16 miles if you’re planning to ride consistently in full power mode, but you can be sure a battery like this will never burn out unexpectedly or let you down. It also has a quick recharge time of 3-4 hours.
Similar to other scooters from GoTrax, the Ultra comes without suspension, but it does have 8.5 inch air-filled tyres which do a half-decent job of cushioning you against hard impacts. They also have good traction and will help to keep you stable. That being said, you’re still likely to feel some of the vibrations from very rough surfaces which will be uncomfortable. To get the best of the Ultra, stick to maintained routes.
You’ll also find the same braking mechanism on the Ultra as on the Elite. This consists of a rear disc brake and front regenerative electronic brake. Both of these together give you great control over the scooter and you won’t have any issues coming safely to a stop. Plus, disc brakes are both efficient and reliable, so you can be sure that GoTrax hasn’t cut any corners in this department.
When it comes to the cockpit though, you’re confronted with a far simpler setup. This isn’t a bad thing — it does exactly what you need it to — but it’s not as full-featured as other handlebar arrangements. Instead, it features a straightforward smart display that shows your speed, gear selection, and battery. It’s not simple enough that it doesn’t come without cruise control, though. You’ll still be able to ease off the ergonomic thumb throttle and relax whenever you feel like it.
You’ll be able to control your front headlight from the handlebars too. Together with the reflective rear light, they do a reasonable job of making you visible. If you’re going to be riding in the dark regularly, however, make sure to invest in some brighter lights to be on the safe side.
One of the Ultra’s strengths is that it’s very portable. With a total weight of 12 kg, you’ll be able to carry it with ease and the folding mechanism makes it simple to carry and store. Despite its small size, it can still support riders with a weight of up to 100 kg so you don’t need to fret about it having a delicate build. It’s no tank, but its aluminium frame is sturdy enough to deal with daily riding. Plus, its water-resistant rating of IP54 means that it can handle light rain too.
This is a great option if you’re on a budget but you want to guarantee a certain level of quality. It’s not the fanciest scooter on the block but the compromises GoTrax has made to deliver the Ultra at such a low cost won’t affect your riding enjoyment, and you can rest easy knowing that your scooter is backed up by impressive parts like the LG battery.
Everyone’s heard of Segway, right? They’re famous for their unique transport machines, but they design pretty awesome scooters too. An example of this is the Ninebot E25E, a great entry-level kick-to-start scooter that has the potential to take your commute to new heights.
Similar to the two previous GoTrax scooters, the E25E has a top speed of 15.5 mph which is perfect for inner-city riding. The acceleration is smooth but it’s not particularly fast, although this does depend on what riding mode you’re in. The E25E comes with three different options: limited, standard, and sport. Unsurprisingly, you’ll find the quickest pick up when you’re riding in sports mode and this setting is also the best for tackling hills. The 300W motor has a peak output of 700W that will allow you to tackle 10% incline grades. This is good for most urban slopes, but you’ll notice the E25E slowing down considerably on more ambitious hills.
With a range of 15.5 miles, the E25E is ideal for short to medium-length commutes. It only takes 3.5 hours to recharge too, which is only a little longer than a decent afternoon nap.
The E25E features an electric brake on the front wheel and a manual rear foot brake to deliver an abrupt stop when you need it. If you want something more gradual, the electric brake will bring you to a halt smoothly. When using both brakes together, you can expect to come to a precise and controlled stop within a matter of moments.
Segway is a well-respected brand, so it’s no surprise that the E25E has gone through a heck of a lot of testing to make sure it’s well equipped to keep you safe. In addition to its dual braking system, it also comes with a smart battery management system to prevent your scooter from burning out on you. Its frame is made from high-strength, lightweight aerospace-graded aluminium alloy which guarantees a sturdy and secure ride, whilst its water-resistant rating of IP54 means it can handle some light rain now and again.
The E25E comes with both front and rear shock absorption which helps to diffuse vibrations from the road and, for the most part, prevents you from being shaken all over the place. This is crucial on a scooter like this, which comes with solid rubber tyres.
Don’t get me wrong, there are some big advantages to solid tyres. For one thing, you can say goodbye to flats and awkward wheel maintenance. However, they equally have their problems. For example, they have poor traction in wet weather and they provide little to no damping on rough surfaces. Even with the support from the suspension, riding on cobbles will be a challenge.
The E25E has been well-designed for easy lifting and transportation and scores well in terms of portability. Weighing just 14.3 kg, it’s light enough for most riders to carry. The one-click folding system means you can collapse it in around 5 seconds so you won’t need to spend ages fiddling with an awkward mechanism. Once folded, you can also drag the E25E behind you if you have problems lifting it or want to give your arms a break.
At £399, the E25E sits comfortably on the price border between entry and mid-range scooter, however, there’s one feature that sets it apart from the more budget basic offerings. Like all Ninebot scooters, it comes with an integrated mobile app that can be connected to the display on the handlebar via Bluetooth.
This technological flourish means you can manage all of your riding data with a few taps of your finger. You can customize your ride by adjusting your cruise control and selecting speed settings too. You can even tweak the cosmetic look of the E25E, giving you the option to change the colour of your under-deck lighting for a futuristic look.
When it comes to lights, the E25E features a front LED headlight with a brightness of 1.5W which allows others to see you coming. It’s not quite bright enough to show the path ahead though, so I’d recommend buying additional lights to help with this. This scooter also has brake lights, but they’re positioned on the side of the wheel, so can’t be seen from behind. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with any rear-facing lights, so you’ll definitely need to invest in extra lighting here.
Aesthetically, the E25E is sleek and smart. It’s perfectly built to fit into an urban environment and it’ll appeal to those of you looking for something with a more minimalist feel. However, it feels like a big chunk of the price pays for the Segway name rather than the specs on offer. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing because you’re essentially paying for excellent build quality and a scooter you can rely on. Plus, there’s no doubt that the Ninebot E25E can get you where you need to go in a fairly comfortable style. However, if you’re looking for outstanding performance over brand recognition, this scooter might not be your best option.
If you’re on a tight budget but you still want good value for your money, look no further. GoTrax has done it again. The GXL V2 is an excellent scooter with excellent value. I’ve helped many others, just like you, pick out the GXL V2 and so if you want to find out why I think it’s the best model you can buy for under £300, read on.
Firstly, it has a top speed of 15.5 mph thanks to the 250W motor. This is the average motor size that you’re likely to find on scooters in this price class and although it’s on the small side, you won’t need to worry about it underperforming. It still has good acceleration and will propel you up to a speed that is fast enough for inner-city exploration. It’s also powerful enough to climb 14% hills, however, it’s worth bearing in mind that this isn’t the V2’s strongest area, so you’ll find yourself slowing down on inclines towards the max of its capacity.
The GXL V2 has a dual braking system to match its speed capabilities, featuring a rear disc brake and a front regenerative brake. It’s extremely rare to see a scooter under £300 with a braking mechanism on each wheel, and even rarer to see that one of them is a disc brake. These tend to be reserved for more expensive models because of their efficient performance. Needless to say, this setup is excellent for this price point and will deliver strong and responsive braking power with just one squeeze of the handbrake.
Usually, cheaper scooters opt for solid tyres, as you saw on the Ninebot E25E, however, these aren’t the most comfortable of tyre types. Luckily, the V2 bucks the trend like its other GoTrax cousins and comes with 8.5 inch pneumatic tyres instead. Not only do these have better traction in poor weather conditions, but they also provide good damping and shock absorption against surface imperfections.
This is vital because the V2 doesn’t come with any suspension, so the wheels are your main means of ensuring a comfortable ride. With this in mind, I’d recommend sticking to smoother roads when riding this scooter, although the tyres will do a good job of dealing with most bumps.
The V2 doesn’t have an exhaustive range, and with a top mileage of 12 miles, I’d say it’s best for those of you who don’t have an overly long commute or plan to stay close to home. On the positive side, it has a reduced charge time of 4 hours because of the smaller battery size. If you need something to go a bit further, take a look at the GoTrax XR Elite which offers a top range of 18 miles.
As with all GoTrax scooters, a standout feature of the GXL V2 is its portability. It’s very light, weighing just 12 kg, so most riders should be able to lift and carry this without any issues. Its one-step folding system also means that it’s compact once the stem is locked into the rear fender, so you can store it easily when you’re not using it.
It features a simple cockpit setup that’s pretty typical of the GoTrax range. Here you’ll find a straightforward digital display that shows your speed and battery life. You’ll also be pleased to know that the GXL V2 comes with a cruise control setting so you can relax and ride in the lap of luxury when you want to maintain a single speed. You’ll also spot a red button, which allows you to change your gear and alternate between different speed settings.
This red button also operates your headlight, which is of average brightness. The V2 doesn’t have a tail light but instead comes with a rear reflector. As a result, you’ll need to buy additional lighting for improved visibility.
The GoTrax GXL V2 costs just £239, which is a bargain because you’re getting dual-brakes, pneumatic tyres, and a decent top speed for that price. Despite it being a budget offering, the V2 has great build-quality too and feels very sturdy rather than cheap and flimsy.
Overall, it’s an awesome option for anyone with a little less cash to spend or for beginners who want to test out an electric scooter. It’s excellent value for money and is without a doubt one of the best budget scooters.

Not everyone is looking for a scooter that appeals to a wide spectrum of users and can do it all. There are plenty of riders out there who have a very particular set of needs. The INOKIM Mini 2 is a scooter that caters to a specific niche of users just like this. It’s the perfect fusion of portability and versatility and is an ideal option for lighter riders who have a short or multi-modal commute.
Firstly, it’s important to say that if you weigh over 75 kg, this scooter isn’t for you. The Mini 2 has been designed specifically for riders in a lighter weight category. As a result, it’s usually marketed towards women or teens, however, it’s not limited to this demographic, so long as you fit within the weight limit.
With that out of the way, we can get onto the good stuff, like speed. Similar to the GoTrax GXL V2, the Mini 2 comes with a 250W brushless motor which gives it enough power to reach 15 mph. The acceleration is pretty swift on a scooter so small, so you’ll easily be able to keep up with the morning rush. However, if you’re a bit of a self-confessed speed fiend, you might find yourself left wanting.
As mentioned, the Mini 2 has been created with a very specific kind of user in mind, namely one that doesn’t have long distances to travel and wants a scooter that's super light and portable. The high-efficiency lithium-ion battery delivers a range of around 10 miles and has a recharge time of 3-4 hours. You’ll likely see less than the maximum mileage if riding at top speed, though. This is fairly limited but well-suited to riders with short commutes, or for integrating into journeys that include public transport. Alternatively, it is ideal for leisurely weekend pursuits.
As the name suggests, the Mini 2 has been designed to be a small scooter. It’s no surprise then that it weighs a tiny 10.4 kg. Not only is this easier for small riders to lift, but it also makes taking your scooter onto public transport much simpler. Once folded, you won’t have to worry about navigating tight spaces with an awkwardly bulky machine. Instead, the Mini 2 is discreet enough that other passengers won’t even notice it’s there.
Plus, if it does get a bit awkward to hold, it even features integrated trolley wheels so you can drag it behind you.
Continuing the theme, the wheels on the Mini 2 are smaller than most, measuring 6 inches in height. Their size does prevent them from rolling over obstacles easily, so you’ll want to keep an eye out for bigger potholes just in case. The front tyre is pneumatic whilst the rear is solid, which gives you the best of both worlds. The rubber rear eliminates the risk of getting a flat, whilst its air-filled counterpart performs well in wet weather and provides some cushioning against bumps in the road.
This is supported by the rear damper which resembles a thick elastic band wrapped around the rear of the deck. It does a half-decent job of taking the strain off the solid back wheel but the Mini is incapable of delivering a buttery smooth ride unless your rolling over tarmac.
The Mini 2 features a front electric and rear step on brake. Dual braking systems are unsurprisingly a lot stronger than those which only deliver stopping power to one wheel and I’d recommend using both brakes together to achieve maximum control.
Unlike other electric scooters, the Mini 2 doesn’t come with a handlebar display, so you won’t be able to track your speed as you go. Instead, it has a battery light indicator and a charging port. This is a convenient addition for charging your phone on the go, but it will drain the battery giving you significantly less than the maximum 10 mile range.
Disappointingly, the Mini 2 doesn’t come with any lighting and instead features reflective stickers. These are insufficient for making you visible to other road users and aren’t very helpful when it comes to illuminating the path in front of you either. If you know you’re going to be riding in the dark, you’ll need to purchase additional front and rear lighting to remedy this.
Costing around £450, the Mini 2 it's lacking some of the features I’d expect to see for this price point, such as a handlebar display and lights. However, its slightly steeper price is down to the fact it’s designed by INOKIM which is one of the best scooter brands. As a result, you know you’re going to be getting a high-quality product.
